a copy of the single manual harpsichord by Joachim Jose Antunes, Lisbon, 1785

This harpsichord by Michael Cole is a faithful replica of the instrument by Antunes at Finchcocks Living Museum of Music, Goudhurst, Kent. It has some unusual features, notably some extraordinarily long bass strings which give a unique tone. Brass strings are used throughout. Antunes' harpsichord originally had two pedals as here, one of which operated a rising buff stop on both unisons together. By the client's request this copy has been given ebony and mother-of-pearl keys in remembrance of Queen Maria Barbara of Spain (originally from Portugal) who had a five octave harpsichord with keys in these materials. The interior is veneered in tulip wood.

Since this photograph was taken this harpsichord has been decorated under the lid with an oil painting with figures in a classical landscape, copying the one at the Finchcocks Museum.  Scarlatti Recordings
